The texts are purely based on the 3 pillars on which Vaastu stands to design or build a form. Nothing falls apart from these three.
1) Bhogadyam - Uilitarian.
2) Sukhadarshanam - Aesthetics or Visual delight.
3) Ramya - Spiritual or Inner Satisfaction.

Interestingly, these three come from Mahabharata where Yudhistira laments of what can be done with this empty land (Indraprastha) allotted to them. There appears MAYA, architect of asuras who is father of Mandodari and father-in-law of Ravana, saying that "I have built Lanka, the pride of the people and with your agreement I will build brilliant structure", which is rejoiced till date as MAYA SABHA.

Vastu Shastra is entirely a subject of field application with an understanding of Nature and the capacity to be creative. The shastras insist that the 'STHAPATI/SCULPTOR' stays and observe the natural phenomena of the land under consideration. Ideally, it should be an entire year of all 6 seasons where he understands the Breeze directions, Nature of the Soil and Vegetation, the kind of growth of flora fauna.

According to Vaastu Cosmology all directions are safe for dwellers and good to stay in any facing. But today's idea of Vaastu is completely disappointing. Making people to get sunken in slave thoughts that if something is placed at a particular place then some inauspicious things happen like; loss of health, marriage will break, wealth decreases etc ...

These came into scenario when people of Jyotishya background leaped unto Vaastu for making money. And most importantly this shifting occurred under British Raj, completely side lining our indigenous Engineering Marvel and Architecture which have been for 1000's of years, says Shashikala Ananth who has studied the Vastu Shilpa Shastra for 11 years under a very renowned architecture Shri Ganapati Sthapati who himself hails from an unbroken lineage of sculptor-designer-builder of Brihadeshwarar Temple, Tanjore (11th Century).

She continues to reveal that the understanding of our Engineering Marvel, self weighing stoned temples without a single crack, Sacred Geometry, Trigonometry Housing mansions, Triguna Capacities, Rythm Order and Sensousness, all lost in the due course of time. We have adopted English/Italian models which is not appropriate to our climate, culture and lifestyle. For example., Compass instead of SUNDIAL where the variation is 12.3 degrees, Soma sutra (NorthSouth axis) insead of Bramha Sutra (EastWest axis), Covering the Bramhasthan/central portion of house which means blocking the energies between earth space and welcoming toilets inside houses. (lets take present day population space availability in another debate)

Going further, that indigenous community who build these marvels are VISHWA KARMA(s) having a very sound knowledge of Theoretical, Technical and Creative .
Sub categorises into 5: (1) Manu (2)Maya (3)Twashta (4)Shilpi and (5)Vishvagna - Jewellery making.
They lived across Bharat and are not confined by any Empire State. They looked upon the entire designed environment which includes Temple architecture, Housing architecture, Stone Mansions, Tanks, Ponds, Carpenters, Vessel (metal) makers, Craftsmen, and Armaments / Weaponry (implements of warfare). They worked with simplest tools even to construct robust structures.

Upsetting fact is that this community is vanishing leaving none to manifest such astonishing 'Art Architecture' especially what we are talking of Bharatiya Model.

An attempt to Shashikala Ananth's works pertaining to Vaastu Shilpa Shastra which is a subject matter interest and worth discussion.
Just to introduce Shashikala Ananth, an expert in Vaastu Shastra for over 35 years. She has projects mentoring young minds to understand and reflect the wisdom of Indian traditions like Vaastu and Dhyan for harmonious life in modern era.
